This Is a Game Called Snaps

I didn't get much sleep last night. It's just after 5am, and I've been awake since 2:30 this morning, laying in bed, unable to sleep. My mind started wandering through the past, and in the last 2.5 hours, it seems as if I've remembered every summer camp experience, every friend, every crush, every romance, and a whole bunch of defining experiences. While frustrated that I couldn't get back to sleep, I'm at the same time nostalgic and sentimental for this journey down memory lane. I think it's worthwhile to remember the past occasionally, to reflect on where we've come from, how we got here, and the people and events that have made us who we are. A night of lost sleep is a reasonable price to pay for such a rich ocean of thought and memory. Of course, life when the sun is up is too hectic, too distracting, to give a moment's respite to allow distant memories to surface, so the middle of the night seems to be the only time when something like this could happen, for me, at least.

Something interesting I noted as the memories unfolded, not many of them were from the time I worked at GE, from the time I was 21 onward. There were a few, but most were from college and summer camps during high school.

Some of the people I thought of were: Jason B. Whitlock, Jessica Kelley, Chris Henning, Carmelita Adelina Stafford (I told her that her name sounded like a fine cheese - she took it in stride), Bradley Jordan, Olivia Bell, Clayton Oliver, Janis Warford (deceased), Jennifer Leonard, Angela Lau, Ernie Chen, Kara Tetzlaff, Laura McGaughey, Pam Howell, Keith Persons, Frank Aviles (deceased), Lance Burke, Tiffany Chrisman, Alicia Jones, Gary D. Soltow, Monica Deckard, Seth Johnson, Julie Hardin, Lorie Cash, Jennifer Boblitt and husband Jody, Jim Kuczun, Clayton Eye, Aaron Witten, Scott Smart, Sherman Adelson, Doug Hagan, Dan Mercer, Eric Hall, Michelle Browning, Kelly Willis, Wendy Wallin, Jessica Groves, David Wilkes, Pete Ruiz, Michael Krantz, LaDawn Krantz, Ben Murr, Ali Sareea, Brian Pearson, Lois Beaven, Greg Bell, Ben Ellis, and Lori Haycraft.

These are just some of the people who've touched my life and made a lasting impression on me. Happy and joyous times, some regrets, some people I'm still in touch with, many I'd have no idea how to contact. Oh, what a night it's been.

And if you're wondering about the title of this post, it's a mind-reading trick game that someone in the above list played at Governor's Scholars Program. That game was central to forming the group of friends I made there in 1992, which was the best summer of my life.

It's 5:40am... the first hints of day are glowing in the eastern sky. Time to begin a new day in the present.
